The Decision to Stay: Understanding Quick Response Indonesian Code Standard (QRIS) Continuance Intention Among Merchants

Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital payment systems has transformed financial transactions in Indonesia, with the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) emerging as a key initiative for advancing a cashless economy. Although existing studies have extensively examined consumers’ adoption of QRIS, empirical evidence on merchants’ continuance intention remains limited, despite their pivotal role in sustaining the QRIS ecosystem. Grounded in Technology Continuance Theory (TCT), this study investigates the determinants of merchants’ continuance intention to use Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) by integrating constructs from the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Expectation Confirmation Model (ECM). The proposed model examines the effects of confirmation, perceived usefulness, perceived value, perceived risk, and user satisfaction on continuance intention, while age and gender are incorporated as moderating variables. Data were collected from QRIS-enabled merchants in Indonesia and analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). A robustness test was also conducted to verify the stability and reliability of the proposed model. The findings highlight that continuance intention is influenced by satisfaction, while satisfaction is influenced by confirmation, perceived value, perceived usefulness, perceived risk, and perceived value. Theoretically, this study extends the information systems and fintech literature by adopting a merchant-oriented perspective on technology continuance. Practically, these findings provide valuable insights for Bank Indonesia to support the broader adoption and scalability of QRIS, including its implementation across other ASEAN countries, thereby strengthening its contribution to Indonesia's digital economy.
